In the Rectorate Building’s Exhibition Area, valuable art works meet the art lovers.

The last exhibition of the IU Rectorate Building’s Exhibition Area “A Gate to the Past: Yenikapı Shipwrecks Exhibition” met with art lovers on January 5th, 2017. The exhibition, organized by the Director of both IU Faculty of Letters Department of Conservation and Restoration of Movable Cultural Assets and IU Yenikapı Shipwrecks Project, Prof. Dr. Ufuk Kocabaş, and the assistant researchers of the project, Research Asst. Taner Güler and Asst. Prof. Dr. Mesut Aytekin, takes the Yenikapı Shipwrecks, which attract the world’s attention, as its main subject.

In the exhibition, photographs of the Yenikapı Shipwrecks Project, which is run by the IU Faculty of Letters Department of Conservation and Restoration of Movable Cultural Assets, have been displayed.

The “Gate to the Past: Yenikapı Shipwrecks Exhibition”, which is organized by the IU Department of Press and Public Relations, will be open to visitors until the 31th of January.

After the completion of the restoration of the Rectorate Building, the Rectorate Building’s Exhibition Area continues to host new exhibitions. Art lovers view the masterpieces in the historical atmosphere of the Rectorate Building.

About the Yenikapı Shipwrecks Project

The works carried out in Marmaray and subway transfer station have become a major archaeological excavation with the capture of historical remains. During the excavations carried out by Istanbul Archeology Museums in Yenikapı between 2004 and 2013, Theodosius, the most important port of Constantinople on the coast of Marmara Sea, has been discovered. Thirty seven shipwrecks that are discovered here and considered to be dated between the 5th and 11th centuries EC have been regarded as the largest collection of medieval ship collections found in a single excavation area. Within the IU Yenikapı Shipwrecks Project, 28 of the wrecks were documented and taken out of the area to be protected.

The project is being carried out by the academicians and students of the Department of Conversation and Restoration of Movable Cultural Assets’ Marine Archeology Department, using the “Faculty of Letters’ Ship Conservation and Reconstruction Laboratory” and “IU Yenikapı Shipwrecks Research Center”, which is located at the excavation area.
